What are the Prerequisites for Nursing?
Everyone could probably guess that the only hard part about a nursing course is the education program itself, but no one would have guessed that actual hard part would be before even taking up nursing itself. Just like any other college course, there are certain prerequisites for nursing that every student must meet in order to take up a once-in-a-lifetime course. Although compared to other courses, this may seem a little harder than anyone might expect.
Before entering college, many minimum requirements must be obtained for those who want to obtain the prerequisites of nursing, and it starts as early as the first step in high school. Nursing is a very sought-after and in-demand course, and due to this many establishments and universities have strive to enhance their nursing education programs to keep up with the pace. Most nursing schools would tend to offer extreme admission policies in order to make sure that every aspiring nursing student is qualified and deserving of their education program. Strict quotas are usually observed, and most high school students are also tasked to maintain a high average in order to be accepted. Once the minimum grade and conduct requirements are met, along with other school papers that are required for enrollments, then one may be considered eligible to enroll.
However, the whole process does not stop after simply enrolling in the desired university. Not to seem anti-climactic, but students must then pass an admission test in order for them to be considered truly eligible for enrolling in that nursing course. May it be an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, one must be prepared as most questions would definitely focus on science and biology subjects. But when the student gets through with it, then it will all be smooth-sailing. One may now proceed to the next step of the nursing journey.
Once inside the chosen university, one must earn the credits needed in the degree of nursing. Nursing, considering it is a health care course, most likely focuses on many subjects in science that involve human biology which include, but not limited to: Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Nutrition, Psychology, and Health Economics. Contrary to popular belief, Math classes are essential in a nursing degree, as well as other minor subjects, like, but not limited to: Intermediate Algebra, English Proficiency, Physics, Trigonometry, History, and Literature. These subjects are essential to the holistic build-up of a competent nurse in order to build more focus on subjects exclusive to nursing students like Nursing Concepts, Intensive Nursing, and Community Health Nursing.
Other than all of these prerequisites for nursing, one must be able to possess the one absolute minimum requirement for every hopeful nursing student: perseverance. Every student should be equipped with this very important virtue to guide him or her to the future he or she deserves. One must have a strong life-long resolve in order to make it in this course, and surely the knowledge and the experiences along the way would most definitely be rewarding and worthwhile.
